We are a leader in the field of building preservation and conservation, with an exceptionally talented team that bring expertise, passion, and precision to every project. As we embark on the next phase of growth, we are looking to employ a full-time Estimator to join our tendering department.

If you have a passion for construction, a deep appreciation for heritage buildings and a knack for precision, this could be your opportunity to make a real impact within an organisation that encourages continuous learning and provides real opportunity for personal growth. Built heritage experience is not essential but would be advantageous.

You will work closely with our project managers, architects and engineers, preparing detailed cost estimates and budgets that support Bullen Conservation’s tendering function. You will have strong attention to detail and take a pro-active approach to problem solving.

One of the most rewarding aspects of our work is conserving buildings that hold deep meaning for the communities they serve. Ask anyone from Manchester about the Midland Hotel, and chances are, they’ll have a story to tell or memory to share. Its grand facade is instantly recognisable, standing as a proud reminder of the city’s industrial past and its incredible spirit of innovation and elegance.

It goes without saying that we were delighted to be invited back to conserve additional elements of the building following an extensive fire that caused damage to the Mount Street entrance. Atelier MB architects and heritage consultants have designed and obtained Listed Building Consent for a package of sensitive restoration works, to restore this entrance to its former glory.

Our highly-skilled team of craftspeople will undertake a special conservation clean of the smoke-stained area before carrying out full replacement of the original affected Granite and Terracotta balconies. Damaged masonry on the granite doorway and steps will be carefully and methodically cut out and replaced with matching original Scottish Peterhead granite.

There’s something truly special about revisiting a building we’ve previously restored. Three years have passed since we carried out cleaning, repointing and applied gold leaf to the iconic letters, and it’s fantastic to see the facade still looking beautiful in the Autumn sunshine.

We’re thrilled to unveil the first of our new fleet of vans! Our goal has always been to deliver the highest level of service to protect and preserve historic sites. Our new fleet allows us to reach our clients quickly, maintain our quality standards, and tackle even the most complex projects with all the tools we need right at hand. We’ve chosen fuel-efficient models to align with our sustainability goals and to reduce our environmental impact on every journey.

So, keep an eye out for our team in their new vans at conservation sites across the North.

Over the summer, alongside Historic England and The Churches Conservation Trust, we delivered Historic England’s heritage building skills summer school, an immersive programme designed to equip participants with both the theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills that are critically needed in the industry. At Bullen Conservation, our aim is to bridge the gap by nurturing the next generation of conservation specialists who can help preserve our built heritage for future generations.

“Historic England’s heritage building skills programme was developed as a pilot to address the skills shortage to maintain and improve historic buildings. A key aspect of the programme is to provide trainees and apprentices the opportunity to work on a live construction site. Working with the Churches Conservation Trust and Bullen Conservation at the Church of St John in Lancaster, the attendees gained from a wealth of expertise being shared with them and developed invaluable and broader experience that will inform their future career. The enthusiasm from all parties involved in passing-on their knowledge has been critical in delivering a successful Summer School”.  - Florence Salberter, Historic England, Heritage Projects Manager.

A warm welcome to our new apprentices, Harrison and Ethan.

We’re thrilled to announce that two new apprentices have joined Bullen Conservation. As passionate advocates of apprenticeships, we understand the value of hands-on experience and are proud to be part of a tradition that passes down essential skills to the next generation of craftspeople.

Harrison and Ethan will get the chance to work on preserving and restoring historic buildings while learning from some of the best in the business. We’re thrilled to support their growth and development, and we look forward to seeing their contributions as we work together to safeguard our heritage.

Welcome to the team! We can’t wait to see the impact you’ll make.

It’s great to be back at the Blackpool Grand Theatre as we embark on a series of crucial repair and restoration works to the theatre’s external facade and the iconic Cupola.

Bullen Conservation has undertaken several restoration projects over the years to safeguard its historical significance, and our ongoing collaboration ensures that the facade remains as stunning today as it was when the theatre first opened its doors over a century ago.

The domed Cupola is one of the most striking features of the theatre’s exterior, holding a prominent place in Blackpool’s skyline and its intricate carvings and sculptural embellishments must therefore be meticulously maintained.

Our team will carry out masonry, stonework and roof repairs, pediment rebuild, roof redecoration repairs, as well as joinery and render repairs.

We are delighted that The Churches Conservation Trust (CCT) has entrusted Bullen Conservation to undertake a programme of urgent repair works to the Church of St John the Evangelist in Lancaster, including roof, masonry, leadwork and joinery repairs. These works are supported by a Heritage at Risk Repair Grant from Historic England that will also enable us to deliver hands on practical training at Historic England’s Heritage Building Skills Summer School, taking place at the church throughout August.

At Bullen Conservation, we believe that true mastery comes from experience and are committed to equipping our team with the skills, knowledge and confidence necessary to excel in their roles. Our approach ensures that our employees not only understand the theory behind their work, but also possess the practical abilities to perform at the highest level. The summer school will also help to tackle the critical shortage in essential skills needed to rescue historic buildings across the country.

We’re thrilled that the project to conserve Astley Hall won the heritage award at the 2024 RICS Awards on Tuesday. Led by Maybank Building Conservation LLP, the ambitious undertaking aimed at preserving the legacy of the magnificent 400 year old Grade I listed building will ensure it remains a vibrant part of the Lancashire community for generations to come.

As Principal Contractor, we had to address several critical aspects of Astley Hall, including its structural integrity, improving the building’s accessibility, as well as ensuring any works undertaken maintained its historical accuracy and authenticity.

As work commenced we aided in the detailed assessment of the building’s condition before a comprehensive restoration plan was developed. We then addressed all immediate structural issues before embarking on a phase of works to carefully restore or replicate the building’s features using traditional materials and techniques. Throughout the project we involved the local community through workshops, tours and educational programmes to create significant social value for the people of Chorley, whilst incorporating sustainable practices to minimise the environmental impact and ensure the hall’s long-term preservation.

The RICS Awards showcase the most inspirational initiatives and developments in land, real estate, construction and infrastructure. We are thrilled the judges have recognised the outstanding achievement, teamwork and supply chain involved in the conservation of Astley Hall.
