At Bullen Conservation, we’re committed to building an inclusive environment where women can grow and succeed. A big part of that is ensuring they have the training, support and opportunities to keep learning and building their careers - because not only do they deserve those opportunities, but the industry needs them! With a growing skills gap in building conservation, women bring new skills, fresh ideas and valuable perspectives that can help close the gap and drive the industry forward.

This National Apprenticeship Week, Bullen Conservation proudly celebrates the role our apprentices play across our business. This year’s theme, ‘Skills for Life’, resonates perfectly with our commitment to bridge the skills gap that currently exists within our industry by allowing us to cultivate skilled, dedicated professionals who are now integral to our business and pivotal in our growth.
After completing a two year apprenticeship, Sam Phillips transitioned to a full-time role with us last year and we couldn’t be prouder! Seeing talented individuals like Sam grow in confidence and excel is what it’s all about!
“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to start my career through an apprenticeship here. I’ve loved being part of such a brilliant team – there’s a great sense of camaraderie and banter, which makes every day enjoyable. And it’s not just stone masonry I’ve learned- I’ve also gained skills in pointing, joinery and painting that will support my career for years to come. As a Manchester lad, I’m especially proud to have had the opportunity to contribute to the restoration of so many of the City’s iconic buildings and landmarks, like Chethams School of Music, the Albert Memorial, forming part of the ‘Our Town Hall’ project and The Midland Hotel. II’m excited to continue growing and contributing to the amazing work we do here”. — Sam, Stone Mason

View all updatesOne of the most rewarding aspects of our work is conserving buildings that hold deep meaning for the communities they serve. Ask anyone from Manchester about the Midland Hotel, and chances are, they’ll have a story to tell or memory to share. Its grand facade is instantly recognisable, standing as a proud reminder of the city’s industrial past and its incredible spirit of innovation and elegance.
It goes without saying that we were delighted to be invited back to conserve additional elements of the building following an extensive fire that caused damage to the Mount Street entrance. Atelier MB architects and heritage consultants have designed and obtained Listed Building Consent for a package of sensitive restoration works, to restore this entrance to its former glory.
Our highly-skilled team of craftspeople will undertake a special conservation clean of the smoke-stained area before carrying out full replacement of the original affected Granite and Terracotta balconies. Damaged masonry on the granite doorway and steps will be carefully and methodically cut out and replaced with matching original Scottish Peterhead granite.
There’s something truly special about revisiting a building we’ve previously restored. Three years have passed since we carried out cleaning, repointing and applied gold leaf to the iconic letters, and it’s fantastic to see the facade still looking beautiful in the Autumn sunshine.

View all updatesOver the summer, alongside Historic England and The Churches Conservation Trust, we delivered Historic England’s heritage building skills summer school, an immersive programme designed to equip participants with both the theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills that are critically needed in the industry. At Bullen Conservation, our aim is to bridge the gap by nurturing the next generation of conservation specialists who can help preserve our built heritage for future generations.
“Historic England’s heritage building skills programme was developed as a pilot to address the skills shortage to maintain and improve historic buildings. A key aspect of the programme is to provide trainees and apprentices the opportunity to work on a live construction site. Working with the Churches Conservation Trust and Bullen Conservation at the Church of St John in Lancaster, the attendees gained from a wealth of expertise being shared with them and developed invaluable and broader experience that will inform their future career. The enthusiasm from all parties involved in passing-on their knowledge has been critical in delivering a successful Summer School”. - Florence Salberter, Historic England, Heritage Projects Manager.

View all updatesIt’s great to be back at the Blackpool Grand Theatre as we embark on a series of crucial repair and restoration works to the theatre’s external facade and the iconic Cupola.
Bullen Conservation has undertaken several restoration projects over the years to safeguard its historical significance, and our ongoing collaboration ensures that the facade remains as stunning today as it was when the theatre first opened its doors over a century ago.
The domed Cupola is one of the most striking features of the theatre’s exterior, holding a prominent place in Blackpool’s skyline and its intricate carvings and sculptural embellishments must therefore be meticulously maintained.
Our team will carry out masonry, stonework and roof repairs, pediment rebuild, roof redecoration repairs, as well as joinery and render repairs.
