Scope of Works
Holt Castle, located in Wrexham, is a significant medieval fortress with a rich architectural heritage. Over centuries, it has suffered from extensive material loss, quarrying, and environmental degradation, leaving only fragments of its former grandeur. Any conservation work undertaken needed to balance the need to stabilise and protect the remaining masonry while preserving its historical integrity and ensuring sustainable public access.
Appointed as Principal Contractor, Bullen Conservation was responsible for stabilising and consolidating the high-level castellations and perimeter walls of the castle. We sourced replacement stone from local suppliers to closely match the existing materials and salvaged original elements from the site itself. Each detail of the perimeter walls was meticulously rebuilt and consolidated using hydraulic lime mortar with stippled finishes, ensuring a seamless blend with the castle’s authentic character.

Operating in a public common ground with restricted access and challenging environmental factors required careful planning and logistical expertise. The site’s proximity to a flood-prone water causeway and regular public interaction demanded a robust and sensitive approach. Our team worked diligently under strict heritage constraints, adhering to tight timeframes while maintaining the safety of workers, visitors, and the surrounding environment. Despite the complexities, we successfully delivered a project that retained the castle’s historical integrity while meeting modern conservation standards.
