Scope of Works

Longwood Tower, or Nab End Tower, is a 29-foot stone structure overlooking Longwood, Huddersfield. Built in 1861 by local workers using quarry stone, it was approved by landowner William Shaw and overseen by stonemason, George Hellawell, whose initials are carved on it.

Erected for the annual “Longwood Thump” festival, the tower later became linked to the “Longwood Sing,” a tradition since 1873 where choirs and brass bands perform, including Handel’s Messiah. This event continues today, drawing audiences from the region.

Our team was commissioned to undertake extensive external strengthening and refurbishment works on the tower. As a specialist masonry and conservation contractor, we were selected for our expertise in structural tying and strengthening using Cintec Anchors.

Working under the guidance of Historical Engineering Consultants, Charles Beckett Ord, our primary objective was to reinforce the tower while preserving its original masonry character. The project involved installing specially designed 8-9 metre long Cintec anchor ties through the entire structure. These anchors were essential to strengthening the tower and binding all elevations together without compromising its historical integrity.

The tower’s location in a public common ground presented significant logistical challenges. We implemented a carefully planned approach to access, ensuring minimal disruption to the surrounding environment and public use. Our conservation team meticulously ensured that all structural interventions were sympathetic to the original masonry, blending seamlessly with the existing stonework.

Through meticulous planning and specialist execution, we successfully reinforced Longwood Tower while maintaining its historic integrity. The project serves as a testament to our expertise in masonry conservation and structural strengthening, ensuring the longevity of this significant heritage structure for future generations.
