Scope of Works
The Tudor-style black-and-white façade of Chester’s Grosvenor Shopping Centre stands as a striking tribute to the city’s historic architectural heritage. Blending seamlessly with Chester’s iconic streetscape, these preserved timber-framed exteriors reflect the traditional charm that defines the city’s unique character. Their careful integration into the modern shopping centre not only enhances its visual appeal but also plays a vital role in maintaining Chester’s historical identity and sense of place.
Over time, exposure to the elements caused parts of the timber to deteriorate and lose structural integrity. Bullen Conservation was appointed to carry out both structural and aesthetic repairs, as well as address issues with water ingress to prevent further decay.

Structural repairs included the replacement of a full section of seasoned oak. In areas requiring significant structural strength, Rotafix grout and reinforcing rods were used. To halt further deterioration, damaged timber was removed and replaced, and joints between the rendered panels and timber framework were sealed before a protective coating was applied.
Window frames were also repaired or replaced with oak sections, carefully matched to blend seamlessly with the existing fabric. In addition, various dilapidated ornamental elements were replicated in our workshop before being installed on site.
