Scope of Works
Grade I listed Astley Hall has stood for over four centuries and reflects different periods of British history. For the people of Chorley and beyond, it is not just a historic site, but also a museum and cultural hub for the local community. It hosts exhibitions, events, and educational programmes that connect people to their heritage.
To ensure Astley Hall remains a vibrant part of the Lancashire community for generations to come, we embarked on an ambitious undertaking to preserve the building’s legacy.
The project was led by Maybank Building Conservation LLP and Bullen Conservation was appointed as Principal Contractor for delivery of the project. Before works commenced, we had to address several critical issues, including the building’s structural integrity, ensure the building’s historical integrity and authenticity are maintained, as well as improve the building’s accessibility.

As work commenced, we aided in the detailed assessment of the building’s condition before a comprehensive restoration plan was developed. We then addressed all immediate structural issues before embarking on a phase of works to carefully restore or replicate the building’s features using traditional materials and techniques. Throughout the project, we involved the local community through workshops, tours and educational programmes to create significant social value for the people of Chorley, whilst incorporating sustainable practices to minimise the environmental impact and ensure the hall’s long-term preservation.
We were thrilled that the project won the heritage award at the RICS Awards 2024.
