Scope of Works
Bullen Conservation carried out the conservation works to Selby Abbey to preserve its unique beauty and ensure it remains a functional and safe place of worship and community gatherings.
Our comprehensive restoration work focused on addressing critical water drainage issues and preserving the building’s historic fabric. Key elements of the project included the removal of deteriorated lead coverings in the gutter valleys and the installation of a new lead waterproofing system. This upgrade was essential in preventing further water damage and ensuring the long-term structural integrity of the Abbey.
One of the primary challenges was balancing the need for high-quality craftsmanship with a restricted budget. Through meticulous planning and efficient resource management, we successfully delivered the project within financial constraints without compromising the integrity or aesthetics of the restoration. Another significant challenge was ensuring that the Abbey remained fully operational throughout the works. To achieve this, we implemented phased scheduling and innovative scaffolding solutions, allowing safe access for worshippers and tourists while minimising disruption. Our approach ensured the worksite remained secure, accessible, and discreet throughout the project.

Due to extensive deterioration, replacement stone components were carefully sourced, crafted, and installed to match the original structure. Our skilled stonemasons carried out intricate repairs on delicate window tracery, ornate bases, and complex parapet designs. Where the original stone was too damaged to be repaired, entire sections were carefully dismantled and rebuilt to ensure structural stability.
All new stone elements were carved and dressed in-house by our expert stonemasons, ensuring complete control over quality and authenticity. In addition, the Abbey’s historic stained glass was meticulously restored—each panel was carefully removed, cleaned, repaired, and refitted in alignment with the stone tracery repairs.
