Scope of Works

Whalley Abbey is a remarkable example of medieval ecclesiastical architecture, showcasing the craftsmanship and monastic traditions of the Cistercian order. Despite its dissolution, its ruins and surviving buildings continue to tell the story of its religious and architectural past, making Whalley Abbey an important heritage site in Lancashire.

The project to convert the abbey into a conference and retreat centre was a carefully planned undertaking and an excellent example of adaptive re-use, balancing heritage conservation with functional modern needs.

Bullen Conservation was engaged to collaborate with the Principal Contractor and design team on carefully executed alterations, ensuring the replication of the existing internal masonry on the archway while also creating a new archway for the reception area.

The works involved sourcing suitable matching stonework for the client’s approval, aiming to replicate the existing material as closely as possible. Additionally, we provided comprehensive dimensional drawings for both manufacture and construction. Adhering to the client’s brief was essential to preserve the original character of the new archway, ensuring exceptional craftsmanship that remained consistent with the existing design.
