Scope of Works
The Peel Building in Salford is a significant example of early 20th-century architecture, reflecting the industrial heritage of the region. Originally constructed as part of the University of Salford’s development, the building has seen various adaptations over the years. As it represents such an important piece of the area’s architectural history, conservation efforts must focus on preserving the building’s unique brickwork, detailed facades and the distinctive industrial-style windows, while also integrating modern sustainability measures to ensure its continued use. The challenge was to maintain the building’s historical character while making it adaptable to contemporary educational needs, which required careful balancing structural integrity, material preservation, and energy efficiency. This approach not only protects the building’s heritage but also contributes to the sustainability of the surrounding urban fabric.

As Principal Contractor, we completed the full masonry works while overseeing the restoration of over 200 sash windows, extensive roofing repairs, and the redecoration of multiple classrooms, windows, and doors. During the peak of restoration project, we managed up to 80 workers across various trades.
We addressed the effects of aging on this Grade II listed building by undertaking tasks such as repairing weathered terracotta, replacing stained glass units, and re-felting flat roofs to prevent water ingress.
Managing such a diverse scope, which ranged from masonry repairs to groundworks, relied on the specialised expertise of our site team to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery. This was made possible through the dedication of our in-house craftsmen and the strong collaboration with our trusted specialist subcontractors, with whom we have a long history of successful projects.
Our Health & Safety Plan was carefully designed to ensure minimal disruption to the 2,000 students and staff who use the building daily. Given the nature of the work, with some tasks requiring heights over 20m, particular attention was paid to safeguarding both our workers and the general public during the project.
