Conservation

Our conservation philosophy focuses on protecting and maintaining the existing state of a building or structure, with an emphasis on preserving its original materials, craftsmanship and historical authenticity. Conservation requires a holistic approach that focuses on prolonging the life of the building through careful maintenance and minimal intervention, ensuring that any repairs undertaken are sympathetic to the original structure and reversible where possible.

Our specialist conservation team has a broad and deep skill set.  Their strong understanding of building science and experience of working with original materials, many of which can be fragile or obsolete, enables identification of areas of deterioration, structural weaknesses and potential risks that could compromise the building’s integrity if not addressed properly.  Our team undertake a thorough assessment to understand the building’s current condition, original construction methods, any alterations made over time and the specific challenges it faces, before devising a conservation plan that targets the root cause of the problems, rather than just their symptoms.

Our extensive experience as Principal Contractor on many conservation projects has equipped us with the expertise to oversee every facet of complex projects with precision and efficiency.  Our role involves managing a diverse range of stakeholders, including conservation officers, local authorities, architects, archaeologists, building surveyors, structural engineers, community groups and disability advocates.  We have also undertaken many projects to make a building more accessible and safer, without compromising the building’s unique character.

“The job called for genuine craftsmen capable of working to a highly detailed specification. I had no hesitation in recommending Bullen Conservation.

I knew from experience that they had both the skills and the attitude needed to do a superb job, and they did.”
